TAKE TO THE WATER
CVG Airport
2021
The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is partnering with ArtWorks, a Greater Cincinnati nonprofit that transforms people and places through creative works of art, to create two larger-than-life murals in the airport’s new consolidated rental car facility.
I was commissioned for one of the murals. Drawing inspiration from a quote by Fredrick Douglass: ”It cannot be that I shall live and die a slave. I will take to the water…” and countless enslaved Africans that refused to be the subjects of dehumanization, Take to the Water reflects on the symbolic significance of Cincinnati and the Ohio River as a beacon of freedom and passage from one phase of life to another and is based on the architectural interiors and structures of Cincinnati and its waterways.
