The Future is Bright, Slow Down, in collaboration with C.W. Harris Elementary, is a direct response to the C.W. Harris ES students’ input and ideas on addressing pedestrian safety against motor vehicles. After meeting with students from all grade levels, their message for drivers was to slow down. Using shapes and colors, I created a pattern for the curb extensions influenced by over 45 students’ sketches. Throughout each student sketch, I looked for repeated shapes and colors to create a cohesive and consistent design. There were a lot of triangles and rectangles, which inspired the composition. To drive the idea of safety, I incorporated yellow and orange in the design to encourage drivers to slow down at the intersections. Surprisingly, this consideration was helpful to the crossing guard, and it was nice to see the impact of the color choices at the intersection. Lastly, I surveyed the school’s artwork to see how the curb extension artwork would integrate into the overall design and aesthetic of the school and surrounding community. It was important to me that the artwork respected the overall tone of the community.
